Shirley Ann was born on July 19, 1936 on the family farm outside of Staplehurst, Nebraska to John W. H. and Anna M. (Henning) Luethke. She attended school until the 10th grade when she elected to attend the Lincoln Beauty Academy in Lincoln. On May 25, 1957, Shirley married Paul Ehlers at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church, rural Staplehurst.
Many of Shirley’s closest family and friends would agree, no grass ever grew beneath her feet. Shirley was one that liked to keep busy, by looking after her children and grandchildren, volunteering, or working on projects at home. Some of her volunteer work involved being an Election Poll Worker, VFW Women’s Auxiliary, Fire Department Auxiliary, and the Lutheran Women’s Guild.
She enjoyed being a bingo caller for many years and eventually became an avid player. Shirley always had luck with games: bingo, scratch off cards, pickle cards, or any regular card games; if you wanted to win, you needed Shirley on your side. Shirley appreciated the fact that there was a lady’s card club at Brookestone and was always sure to add them to her schedule. She was a master in the kitchen, canning things her husband grew, whipping up recipes from scratch, and always having amazing baked goodies. She was the family’s social butterfly, a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and lover of animals. Shirley touched the lives of so many with her kindness and sweet smile. We LOVE YOU MORE Mom!
Shirley is survived by her children: Chris(Doug) Hampl, of Prague, Suzi(Chuck) Zelasney, of Springfield, SD, Scott Ehlers, of Camarillo, CA, Janet Schopke, of Pender, and Paula Egr(Josh Grape), of Bellwood; grandchildren: Dana Ehlers and daughter Gabrielle, Lindsi (Jason) McNair and daughter Huntlee, Kyli (Tyler) Benson and children Kaden, Brooklyn, and Nash, Rachel (Noah) Koehler and children Owen and Kenna, Sarah Schopke, Eric Schopke, Aubrey Egr, and Kali Egr, Colten Ray, and Jada Grape; many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Paul in 2017, daughter DeAnn Marie, son-in-law Paul Schopke, brothers Ralph (Elaine) Luethke, and Edward (Pat) Luethke.
