Robert “Bob” Ekeler, age 85, passed away on February 2, 2026 .
He was born on July 1, 1940, in David City, Nebraska, to Dr. Louis and Mary Ekeler, who preceded him in death
Robert is survived by his wife, Deanna; daughters Cheryl (Tony), Suzanne, and Kari (Trevor); grandchildren: Allison, Katie, Trevor, Austin, Wyett, Lilly, and Gracie; great-grandchildren: Alexis, Katie Bo and Marlow; brothers: Jake (Judy), Steve, Jim (Janelle), and sister Carol (Dan), nieces and nephews. He was also preceded in death by his brothers Chuck and Bill.
Bob graduated from St. Mary’s High School in David City, continued on to trade school and completed 4 years in the Air Force Reserves. He worked as a general contractor for the telephone company for many years. In 1980, he moved to Colorado, where he spent the remainder of his life.
In Bob’s younger days, he was an avid hunter, fisherman and owned field trial dogs, especially Vizslas and loved coaching baseball in Columbus. He enjoyed watching westerns, cooking a good meal, drinking a cold beer, talking about football and dogs. He loved supporting his grandkids in their sports, mowing the grass, taking care of his truck and helping maintain everyone else’s vehicles. He was always the jokester. He was known for saying, “Keep it between the ditches.” He enjoyed reading the newspaper, playing card games and never missed a good party or meal.
Robert will be remembered for his humor, his love of family and the simple things he enjoyed every day.
A Memorial Mass will be held on Saturday, February 14, 2026 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church in David City, with a rosary recited at 9:30 a.m. Inurnment of ashes will be in the St. Mary's Cemetery with lunch following at Winfields. Moravec Johnson Mortuary is assisting Bob's family with arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, please have a mass said for Bob.
