Mary was born on June 20, 1949 in Columbus, to C.L. and Genevieve (Gumm) Scanlan. She attended school in Schuyler and graduated with the class of 1967. Many people knew Mary as the Schuyler City Clerk, a job which she held and embraced for many years. While working as the clerk, she met her husband Jim Peschel, who was in town working as a roads engineer with the viaduct. The couple hit it off and were married on Feb. 20, 1987.

If Schuyler had a mascot, Mary’s picture would be at the top of the list. She loved her job as City Clerk, and embodied being a volunteer for many organizations even helping to pioneer Keep Schuyler Beautiful. No matter the task, Mary would be there, religiously on time, with a beaming smile on her face and happiness in her heart. On top of volunteering, Mary always made time for her grandchildren’s activities- from sports to music and everything in between. Mary was regularly at so many sporting events she became a family member to many on the team as well as their own families.

Everyone helping out at Mary’s house knew, if it could be recycled, you had better not be throwing it away or you’ll be fishing for it later. Even after her cancer treatments began, nothing stood between Mary and her John Deere riding lawn mower to get her gardening and lawn tasks finished around the yard. Mary was a very punctual person, even if that meant driving through blizzards to get to chemo appointments.

Mary was very proud of her Irish heritage and made a point to travel to Ireland, a trip that she regularly reminisced about. When it came to her taste in music, Elvis was indeed the King, making time to visit his home of Graceland a time or two. She enjoyed her regular trips to Estes Park, Colorado and traveling through the mountains. Mary loved babysitting her great-grandchildren, making sure they were always entertained, but were always learning. Mary would be there for anyone if asked, and never expected anything in return.

Mary is survived by her sons: Shane (Lisa) Kluck of Aurora, Jeff Kluck of Schuyler, stepchildren: Kim (Dave) Jennings of Elkhorn, Kelly (Brenda) Peschel of Lincoln, Jessica (Rome) Maschman of Lincoln, and Jason (Deb) Peschel of Colfax, Washington; sister Rose Hulsey of Schuyler; grandchildren: Trenton, Trevor, and Mackenzie Kluck, Ashlie (Austin) Stone, Ryan, Ethan, and Owen Kluck, Nolan, Grahm, and Grace Peschel, Michelle (Austin) Katt, Ryan (Heather) Jennings, Ava, Shaylea, and Kyleigha Peschel; great-grandchildren Amelia, Emmett, and Brecken Stone, Charolette and Nora Jennings, Miles and Macy Katt, and Ka’myiah Peschel; as well as nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim Peschel in 2004 and brother-in-law Ron Hulsey in 2020.
