It is with great sadness that the family of Mary Agnes Augustyn (Fochtman) announce her passing on November 30, 2022, in San Diego, California at the age of 84. She died in peace and grace, having received the last rites before her passing.
Mary was born on May 23, 1938, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney, Nebraska, the second of five children born to Lloyd and Carolyn (Johnson) Fochtman. She graduated from Cozad High School and enrolled at Kearney State College to pursue a degree in teaching.
While at Kearney State College, Mary met the love of her life, Marion (Mike) Augustyn (d. 2016). They were joined in holy matrimony on June 6, 1957, at Christ the King Catholic Church, in Cozad. Mary devoted much of her time to caring for the 11 children who were born of this union.
Mary’s two greatest passions and sources of joy in life were her many children and grandchildren, and her Catholic faith, which she practiced daily. She was a gifted artist, writer, and singer who enjoyed baking, gardening, reading, feeding the neighborhood squirrels, doting on her pet Kitty, and sharing a good conversation over a cup of coffee and cigarette. She had an active imagination and great sense of humor, which she passed on to her children.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, husband Marion (Mike) Augustyn, brothers Lloyd and Paul Fochtman, and sister Barbara Lavair.
She is survived by her brother John, her 11 children David (Grace) Augustyn, of Pasadena, CA, Paul (Denise) Augustyn, of Octavia, NE, Jane (Mike) Welch, of San Diego, CA, Greg (Ana) Augustyn, of Fallbrook, CA, Mark (Midori) Augustyn, of Sandy, UT, Bill (Elise) Augustyn, of Charleston, TN, Ann (Richard) Clark, of La Verne, CA, Stephen (Tami) Augustyn, of Oceanside, CA, Dan (Missy) Augustyn, of San Gabriel, CA, Cindy (Gary) Moore, of Cleveland, TN, and Benjamin (Victoria) Augustyn, of Miami, FL, 34 grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service was held at Santa Sophia Catholic Church in San Diego, California, on Friday, December 9 at 11:30am. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Abie, Nebraska following a high mass at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Saturday, December 17 at 1:00pm. Visitation and rosary will precede the service at 12:00pm. Condolences can be sent to Jane Welch and Paul Augustyn.
