Joann Mary (Kessler) Thompson, age 82, of Hastings Nebraska passed away on February 7, 2026 in Grand Island, Nebraska.
Memorials can be directed to the Schuyler Community Church's ladies group: United Women of Faith.
A Memorial Service for Joann will be held on Tuesday, February 17, at 11 a.m. at the Schuyler Community Church. Family greeting friends will be from 10 until 11 a.m. at the church. Lunch will immediately follow the service in the church hall. Burial of ashes will take place at a later date in the the Lone Tree Cemetery in Sioux Rapids, IA. Svoboda Moravec Johnson Mortuary is handling arrangements for Joann's family.
Joann was born November 5, 1943 to Willard O.R. and Theo I (Edwards) Kessler. She graduated from Lewiston, MN high school in 1961 and attended Mankato Commercial College for one year.
On September 1, 1962, Joann married David L. Thompson in Lewiston, Minnesota. She farmed alongside her husband near Sioux Rapids, Iowa for 23 years. They moved to Madison, Nebraska in 1986 and then to Schuyler in 1999 and finally to Hastings in 2024. Joan loved spending time with her family and was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Schuyler. She enjoyed working at The Center, delivering their noon in home meals and was a dedicated Friday afternoon bingo caller for many years. She was always up for a good game of cards with family or with her friends at The Center ranging from double pinochle to 9/13.
Joann is survived by her daughter, Shawn Davidson of Hastings, NE, sons Gregg L. Thompson of Norfolk, and Bradley (Becky) Thompson of Sioux City, Iowa; two grandchildren Megan (Nick) Deal of Geneva, NE and Hunter L. Thompson of Grand Island, NE; Great grandchildren Nathaniel L. Thompson and Addilyn Deal; brother Charles (Vicki) Kessler of Spokane, WA and brother-in-law Mark Thompson of Sioux Rapids, IA; as well as several nieces and nephews
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, David Son-in-law Andrew Davidson, great-grandson, Trayton Thompson, sisters-in-law Barbara Sundberg and Candy Thompson, nephew Brett Sundberg, and in-laws Ivan and Virginia Thompson.
