Elsie May was born on February 10, 1933 in Howells to Joseph A. and Katherine (Bocian) Hejhal. After graduating from Howells High School, Elsie ventured to Grand Island (because she wasn't quite ready for the big city of Omaha), where she began working in an ammunition factory during the Korean War. She eventually mastered the city life and moved to Omaha, where she began working at Mutual of Omaha. However, it was her adventurous spirit that led her to pursue training as a nurse’s aide, where she eventually met her future husband, Eugene Alexander.
As her family grew, Elsie embraced and exemplified the role of a devoted mother. She took on flexible jobs that allowed her to raise her children, while contributing to the household, mainly in sales like Princess House Crystal, or hosting home parties for Coppercraft Guild. Elsie also provided support to her husband Gene, assisting him with his barber shop, occasionally helping with cleaning and laundering towels when he'd bring them home at night. Elsie was considered the family's Energizer Bunny, always moving, always bustling, and never one to be still for long.
Through her upbringing in a large family, Elise learned from a young age about cooking and baking, and perfected those skills over the course of her life. She always had several flower gardens surrounding her house and enjoyed tending to them throughout the summer. Elsie loved canning, particularly elderberry jellies, and any fresh produce brought to her by neighbors and family. She excelled at baking and always had something fresh to eat in the house. It was known around the family that if you stopped over at Elsie’s there was a good chance that you wouldn’t be leaving hungry or empty handed.
Elsie is survived by her children: Donna (Tony) Brown of Omaha, Michael (Sarah) Alexander of Council Bluffs, IA, and Scott Alexander (Rachel Langford) of Cedar Creek, NE; grandchildren: Ryan (Amanda) Everson and their daughter Cordelia, Nathan Alexander, Oliva Alexander, and Dalton Alexander, sisters Alice Krenk and Katherine Bayer, sisters-in-law Diana Hejhal as well as many nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Gene in 2016, brothers: James, Joe, John, Gene, Elmer, and infant brother Donald; sisters: Tillie Kruz, Mary Lee Jindra, Dorraine Hejhal, brothers-in-law Lyle Krutz, Lawrence Bayer, and Fred Krenk and sister-in-law Betty Hejhal.
