Dolores (Stara) Coufal was born #4 of 10 siblings on March 23, 1929 on a farm near Bruno, NE to James and Mary Stara. She taught country school in her early 20’s before she married Eugene (Gene) Coufal, on June 18, 1955. Dolores and Gene moved to David City, NE where they lived for almost 70 years and where she became a homemaker to raise their two children, Sharon Coufal (Michael) Hansen of Waterloo, NE and Jim Coufal (Ronaldo Vieira) of West Hollywood, CA.
Dolores enjoyed cooking and baking and was known for her Czech heritage roast duck, gravy, dumplings and sauerkraut. She was especially skilled in baking kolaches and rolls which she learned from her mother and sisters during her adolescent years. Dolores was a moderator/leader of Modern Woodmen Junior Services Club for over 40 years where she brought together youths once a month for fun, field trips, civic events, and personal development club activities. She later became an Ace Accounting Tax Preparer with Gene for hundreds of clients in the Butler County and surrounding area. Dolores also enjoyed the outdoors and gardening, known for her massive garden, which was the “talk-of-the-town”.
Dolores is survived by her two children and their partners, Sharon Coufal (Michael) Hansen, Jim Coufal (Ronaldo Vieira), grandchildren and their partners Jeff Hansen (Nadine) and Lisa Hansen (Dolan) Rutherford and two great grandchildren, Rhylan Rutherford and Kinsley Hansen (and a 3rd girl on the way), and siblings Albin Stara, Don Stara, Ken Stara, and Ernie Stara.
Dolores is preceded in death by her husband Eugene L. Coufal, parents James and Mary (Pecha) Stara, siblings, Marcella Stara, Adeline (Stara) Jakub, Eugene Stara, Martha (Stara) Glynn, and Sally (Stara) Siroky.
Dolores lived at St. Joseph’s Villa in David City for the last four years and recently moved to Omaha in August 2024 to Cedarhurst Senior Living, where she passed peacefully of natural causes with her family at her side. Thank you to all the wonderful caregivers at St. Joseph’s Villa and Cedarhurst who made her comfortable and enriched.
