Blanche Uher

January 11, 1925 — December 11, 2017

Blanche E. Uher, 92, of Schuyler passed away Monday, December 11, 2017, in David City, Nebraska.

Memorials can be made to Howells Community Fund or St. Mary's Catholic Church

Blanche (Mom) was born on January 11, 1925, to Stephen and Mary (Kulhanek) Kalisek, in the Howells area and attended grade school in Colfax County. At dances in the Howells Ballroom, she met and later married Lumir Uher, the love-of-her-life, on April 11, 1944, in St. John’s Catholic Church, in Howells. They farmed on the Uher-family farm near Tabor, south of Howells, until their retirement in 1980. Mom and Dad then moved to Schuyler, where they made and maintained many close friendships.

Mom was wife, chauffeur, farmhand, friend, confidant, teacher, referee, disciplinarian, amazing, selfless, loving, caring, kind, and always—mom; later, we shared her with others as a dotingly-proud grandmother. Those of us fortunate, to be her children, were able to experience all of her wonderful traits. Mom always provided us a hot breakfast before school, well-balanced lunch and had baked goodies for our return. On “special” occasions, Mom would boil water and place it in a thermos with Faltin’s weiners, to enjoy for lunch. She would begin working before sun-up and continued late into the night: cooking, cleaning, helping Dad bale hay and scoop grain, cook for field hands, help us with schoolwork, and made sticky popcorn while we all sat and watched TV. After all of us left home, Mom became a certified nurse assistant in Dodge and Schuyler. She absolutely loved and adored taking care of others, as she had done with us. Mom: was active in our Jolly Jills 4-H club and helped us with cooking and sewing projects; polka-dancing, traveling about the world, and gardening with Dad, and then sharing their produce with friends, neighbors, and family; loved canning produce, cooking and baking-especially a family favorite, her peanut bars. Holidays were special with her home-made kolaches, duck, dumplings and sauerkraut with giblet dressing; Mom was always the last to sit to eat and the first to leave the table in order to start cleaning and begin preparation of the next meal. Mom and Dad’s faith in God was unwavering--we now have two guardian angels watching over us.

Blanche is survived by: sons, Gene (Brigitte) Uher, of Sioux Falls, SD, and Paul (Jill) Uher, of Hastings, NE; daughters, Diane (Del) Truss of Palos Heights, IL; Carol (Dr. Terry) Welke of Lake Charles, LA, and Bev (Tommy) Mann of Colleyville, TX. 10 grandchildren: Scott (Jen) Truss of Round Lake, IL; Craig Truss, of Palos Heights, IL; Michelle Uher of Minneapolis, MN; Brieanna (Jason) Durham of Missouri City, TX; Dr. Brett Welke of Lake Charles, LA; Tommy Mann of Colleyville, TX; CPT.
