Jack Seckman

Jack Seckman, 89, of Schuyler, passed away on Monday, December 11, 2023 at Meridian Gardens in Columbus.

Mass of Christian Burial will be on Thursday, Dec. 14 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Schuyler. Visitation will be Wednesday from 5 until 7 p.m. with a parish rosary at 7 p.m. all at the church. Interment will be in the Schuyler Cemetery with lunch following at St. Augustine’s Parish Hall. Svoboda Funeral Home is assisting Jack’s family with arrangements.

Jack Seckman was born on January 29, 1934, in Schuyler, Nebraska to Leonard and Blanch (Mort) Seckman. He graduated from Schuyler High School in May, 1952. Jack married Lois (Busch) Seckman on June 16, 1956, in Howells Nebraska. Shortly after being married, Jack received orders to report to Fort Chaffee, Arkansas for basic training. Later Jack was stationed at Fort Belvoir, Virginia and was in the 75th army band for 19 months. While in the army band Jack had the opportunity to play for President Eisenhower and his guests, including the queen and other dignitaries. During this time, Jack and Lois lived in Alexandria, Virginia where their first child Richard, was born. After returning home to Schuyler they built a home where Peggy, Barbara, and Jane were born.

Jack owned a sanitation business in his early years. In the mid 1970’s Jack sold his business to purchase land and equipment and pursued his lifelong dream of farming. Jack continued to farm until he retired at the age of 83.

Jack and Lois were members of St. Augustine‘s Catholic Church in Schuyler. Jack spent many hours writing music for the masses, funerals, and family weddings that he sang for with Lois playing accompaniment.

Jack played trombone and played in various bands, starting with Jack Seckman and the Ambassadors, Norrie Egger, Mort Wells Dixieland, Dick Wickman, Bob Crosby, Sammy Kaye, Wayne King, Dennis Wesely, and Myron Floren, etc. He also played for Vikky Carr at the Orpheum Theater and Eddy Haddad for the ice shows at Aksarben and Peony Park.

Jack leaves behind his wife Lois, his children Richard (Sandy) Seckman and Peggy (Jeff) Wachal of Schuyler, Barbara (Mike) McClintic of David City, and Jane (Jim) Kasik of Schuyler. Also 12 grandchildren, Nicole (Zach) Jilek, Alicia Seckman and fiancé LaRon, Cassi (Ross) Helleberg, Adam (Alicia) Wachal, Brittany (Brent) Masek, Jordan (Michaela) Wachal, Shane (Jamie) McClintic, Katie (Dylan) Driver, Megan McClintic and partner Mickey, Klay (Ashley) Kasik, Kalen (Baylee) Kasik, and Jacob Kasik, as well as 23 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Judy Lauterbach.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charles (Erma) Seckman, Eugene (Dorothy) Seckman, sisters Maude (Don) Gless, Eunice (Leland) Marxsen, Laura (Jack) Kroeger, brother-in-law John Lauterbach, sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ellen (William) Babb and one grandchild Jared Kasik.
